Out with the new, in with the old! Paper bags return to Sobeys as plastic bags leave
While the tri-community won’t be seeing a widespread ban on plastic bags until summer, Sobeys locations across NB weren’t waiting until then to get started on removing them as an option from their stores across the province when it comes to bagging groceries.
As of today, paper bags are back & plastic is out! …Of course, the idea is for customers bring reusable bags in each time to grab their items, but the paper bag is an option as well for a 10¢ fee per bag. They also offer the recycled “t-shirt bag” for 25¢ per bag, as well their Compliments brand “Bags for life” for $1 each (if it were to break, Sobeys will replace it free of charge).
A portion of proceeds from the 10¢ paper bag sales will be donated towards planting trees across the country.
Moncton, Riverview & Dieppe will be seeing a plastic bag ban come into effect this summer, July 1st — while the entire country is looking into to banning single-use bags next year.
In case you’re wondering why plastic bags are being banned:
- 100,000 marine animals are killed by plastic bags each year (source)
- 18,000,000,000lbs of plastic waste flows into our oceans each year
- A plastic bag is used for about 12 minutes, on average
- Plastic bags can take up to 1,000 years to break down
Dear Plastic Bags: we hate to see you go, but love to watch you leave!
