To Toss Or Not To Toss… What Foods Can You Eat Past Their Expiry Date
I typically toss MOST foods after an expiration date. You can tell for the most part when foods are spoiled. If not, here are some tips!
✓ Cereal: As long as it is sealed, it can last months past the date on the box. Stale or not, it’s still safe to eat.
✓ Canned goods: As long as there are no dents or rust on the can, they should be good for years.
✓ Chocolate: You might notice a white film on it, but don’t worry, it’s not mold—it’s what’s known as chocolate bloom. As long as you’ve kept it in a cool place, it should be perfectly safe to enjoy. (Good. Because it would kill me to have to throw chocolate out!)
✓ Bread: It may get stale, but it’s still safe to eat.
✓ Eggs: You can tell if it is still good to eat by placing it in a glass of water. If it sinks, dig in; if it floats, toss it.
✓ Pasta: Because it doesn’t contain water, it can last longer than its posted shelf life. Keep it in a cool, dry place.
✓ Yogurt: Unopened, it is usually good for 3 weeks after its expiry date. Opened? Still should be good for a week.
✓ Ketchup/Mustard: Ketchup is good for a year (unopened) after its expiry, mustard: 2 years.
✓ Frozen Foods: They may lose some taste, but they are still safe long after the dates on the label.
✓ Peanut butter: Unopened, it is usually good for a year after the expiry date. Opened, still good for a few months. (As if it would ever last that long…)
